November 2 – What are Christians Like?

Colossians 1: 9 – 14  (NLT)

So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

11 We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, 12 always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. 13 For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, 14 who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

Paul also says he is praying that God will give the people in the church at Colosse “complete knowledge of God’s will and … spiritual wisdom and understanding”. (v. 9) As we read through Colossians, we will realize that Paul was concerned about correct teaching in the church. It was a new church, and there were false teachers there who were getting them off on untrue ideas. Why is it so important that we have correct ideas about our faith? Paul tells us that when we know the truth, “then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.” (v. 10)

Paul prays for them to be strengthened with God’s power so they will have the strength, patience, and joy they need to live amazing lives. Do those words ring a bell from recent devotions?

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” (Galatians 5: 22 – 23)

Paul’s prayer is something that we can pray for ourselves and for others. Our prayer can start with thanksgiving for all that God has done for us, the way he has changed our lives. Then we can pray that we will express our faith through love for others, a love that those around us will see. As we pray and read our Bibles, we will get to know God better with each passing day, and we can pray that God will give us the endurance, patience and joy we need to honour him, to live for him. We can pray that we will know God’s will in all the situations we face.

Our song for today is Word of God Speak by MercyMe.
